9th seed Cilic entered the contest as the favorite having knocked out Novak Djokovic in the previous round, a defeat which resulted in the latter, losing his grasp of the top spot in the men's tennis rankings.

The Croatian, however was undone by an excellent performance from Isner, who needed just an hour and 11 minutes to wrap up a 6-4, 6-3 triumph, which booked him a final encounter.

No matter who wins Sunday’s encounter, Andy Murray will be the new world number 1 after playing John Isner.
