FBI ‘likely’ to press charges against Clinton: Sources
The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)’s investigation into the Clinton Foundation is “likely” to lead to an indictment against Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, US officials say.
The bureau has been probing possible pay-to-play schemes at the family foundation for over a year now and maintains a “very high priority” on the case, Fox News reported Wednesday, citing informed officials.
Sources familiar with the investigation told the network that the FBI had collected "a lot of" evidence and “there is an avalanche of new information coming every day.”
Documents released by the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks, and new emails obtained from other channels were some of the sources that the FBI officials were basing their investigation on, the report said.
According to the Fox News sources, the FBI was “actively and aggressively pursuing this case,” conducting interviews with certain people time and time again.
The statements Clinton and her aides had made during previous investigations were also being used to see if there were any discrepancies.
Founded by former US President Bill Clinton in 1997, the Clinton Foundation has come under bipartisan fire for accepting foreign donations in exchange for influence.
According to leaked emails belonging to Clinton confidants like John Podesta, there seems to have been some connections between the State Department and the Clinton Foundation, back when Hillary Clinton was the secretary of state.
In one of the conversations, a foundation official named Doug Band tells Clinton’s top aide Huma Abedin to make sure that a Lebanese national gets a certain job at the department.
The news came as Clinton’s other controversial case concerning her emails had took a new spin.
Although the former secretary of state was once cleared of all charges regarding her possible mishandling of secrets using a private email server, the FBI reopened her case last Friday, after finding a trove of new emails.
The bureau has reportedly found as many as 650,000 new emails on a laptop belonging to Abedin’s estranged husband, former congressman Anthony Weiner.
James Kallstrom, the FBI’s former assistant director, told a radio show on Sunday that the Clintons were involved in organized crime and that their family foundation was a “cesspool.”
