Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has underlined the necessity of finding a swift political solution to the deadly conflict gripping Syria. The top Russian diplomat also warned that support for extremists fighting to topple the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is hindering attempts to settle the crisis.

Russia has played a “very constructive role” in achieving a political settlement in Syria but it is the United States that is preventing any kind of peace process, says a political analyst and documentary maker.

“It [Russia] has showed it is willing to cooperate to try to come to a solution to the Syria crisis, then it is kind of ironic that the United States is the one who is completely blocking any sort of peace process considering that they are the ones who have created the mess in Syria in the first place,” Boris Malagurski told Press TV.

He also stated Washington has caused a power vacuum in parts of the Middle East with its invasion of Iraq and supporting the so-called moderate militants in Syria, which have led to the strengthening of the Daesh Takfiri terrorists.

The analyst further dismissed US claim of separating moderate militants from extremist terrorists in Syria as “comical,” adding that all the groups who are fighting against President Assad are committing “heinous crimes.”

Malagurski also noted that Russia has been striking Daesh positions in Syria at the official request of the Damascus government while the United States has been “illegally” bombing the war-torn country.

He also opined that the US-led coalition air campaign in Syria has had “very little success.”

According to the analyst, Washington is waiting for the results of the US presidential election before it takes any further action with regard to the conflict in Syria.

Since March 2011, Syria has been gripped by militancy it blames on some Western states and their regional allies.

United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura estimates that over 400,000 people have been killed in the conflict.
