Explosion in Egypt capital kills one civilian
An improvised explosive device has gone off in Egypt’s capital Cairo, leaving one civilian dead and another injured.
An official with the Egyptian Interior Ministry’s Media Center said the device located on the side of the road in Cairo’s Ain Shams district exploded on Friday while a security convoy was passing by, the Arabic-language Egyptian news website al-Youm al-Sabea reported.
The civilian succumbed to injuries in the hospital.
No group has so far claimed responsibility for the blast but such deadly assaults are often blamed on militants affiliated with the Daesh Takfiri terrorists mainly based in Egypt’s restive Sinai Peninsula.
Militants from the Takfiri Velayat Sinai group, previously known as Ansar Bait al-Maqdis, have claimed most fatal attacks, mainly targeting the Egyptian army and police, in the capital and the volatile Sinai Peninsula.
The militants have taken advantage of the turmoil in Egypt caused by the 2013 ouster of the first democratically-elected president, Mohamed Morsi, in a military coup.
The Sinai desert region has been under a state of emergency since October 2014, following a deadly terrorist raid that left 33 Egyptian soldiers dead.
