Two powerful earthquakes have hit central Italy, including the capital Rome, two months after a deadly tremor killed nearly 300 people in the same region.

The two quakes — one measuring 5.4, the other 5.9, according to Italy’s national volcanology center — hit two hours apart on Wednesday evening, sending panicked residents into the streets, knocking down electrical and telephone lines, and damaging buildings.

Although the epicenter of both tremors was in the Valnerina valley, a mountainous area between the cities of Macerata and Perugia, the quakes were felt as far away as the northern region of Veneto. Both tremblers had a depth of about 10 kilometers.

There was no information immediately available about potential casualties caused by the quakes that were also felt in the towns of Pescara, Ancone and L'Aquila, which was jolted by a 6.3-magnitude quake in 2009 that killed over 300 people.

On August 24, a powerful earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale hit Italy, and almost flattened scores of towns and villages in the central parts. The quake was followed by a series of aftershocks, the strongest of which measured 4.2, rattling the already hit areas.
