Marquez, who started from pole at the Philip Island, was well clear of Crutchlow in the race but a braking error caused the Spaniard to crash out with 18 laps to go.

That handed the lead to the Brit as he held off an extraordinary ride from Valentino Rossi to claim his second career MotoGP victory.

He completed the race with a time of 40 minutes and 48.5 seconds, edging Rossi by 4.2 seconds.

Suzuki rider Maverick Vinales finished in 3rd with Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso back in 4th. With the triumph, Crutchlow became the first British winner of the Australian Grand Prix.
