Suspected gas blast kills three in Russia

A building is seen damaged from a suspected gas explosion, in Ryazan, Russia, October 23, 2016.

A powerful explosion has left at least three people dead and 15 others injured in a Russian city southeast of capital, Moscow.

The incident took place overnight in Ryazan, 200 kilometers southeast of Moscow, with images of a devastated apartment block emerging early Sunday.

The blast caused damage to several floors of the apartment building, practically destroying some flats and raining concrete blocks on cars parked below.

Police say they are investigating the cause of the blast. Early speculations said the blast was likely related to a leak in household gas installations or appliances.

The Russian Emergencies Ministry said three of the 15 people hospitalized were found in their flats while the remaining had moved out on their own, adding that a child was among the injured.

At least 60 people had to be placed at a temporary shelter in a nearby school while emergency experts were assessing the damage in the building.
