The United Nations Human Rights Council has voted to launch a special inquiry into the situation in the eastern part of the Syrian city of Aleppo, claiming that Moscow and Damascus are responsible for most of the civilian casualties there.

Britain and its Western and Arab allies introduced a resolution on alleged human rights violations in Aleppo, which was approved on Friday, with Russia and China voting against it. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the West is trying to protect al-Qaeda-linked Nusra Front terrorists in Aleppo.

Commenting on the issue, James Jatras, a former US Senate foreign policy analyst, said that the Human Rights Council’s resolution is “another ploy” by the Western powers to put pressure on the Russians and the Syrians to stop their offensive in Aleppo in order to save terrorist groups.

According to Jatras, the West and its regional allies want to threaten Syria by saying that, “‘If you don’t stop your offensive, we’re going to accuse you of war crimes.’”

He said the reason for such pressure is that Western powers, Saudi Arabia and Qatar “desire to see a terrorist state” replacing the Syrian government.

The West opposed the Russians’ proposals for separating the so-called moderates from the terrorists, because the US, Saudi Arabia and Qatar are trying to “empower terrorists” in Syria, Jatras said.

He also warned that strengthening Daesh and other terrorist groups would put the Middle East in flames, adding that this would be detrimental to the national interests of the United States itself.
