Athletic Bilbao have beaten their arch rivals Real Sociedad 3-2 at home, but only after they fought back from a goal down to win the Basque derby.

David Zurutuza gave the visitors an early lead before the Bilbao left-wing grabbed the equalizer with a superb goal in the 51st minute.

Striker Aritz Aduriz doubled the advantage for the home side within 10 minutes, and Inaki Williams knocked-in the third in the 72nd minute to make it 3-1.

Just when it seemed it was all over for the visitors, defender Inigo Martinez headed home from a narrow angle to give Sociedad some hope 7 minutes from time, but Athletic held firm to move up to 5th in the La Liga.

In the other matches played in La Liga on Sunday, visiting side Malaga managed to hold 10- man Alaves to a 1-all draw. Valencia defeated their hosts Sporting Gijon 2-1 in their first match under new manger Cesare Prandelli. Unbeaten Villarreal thrashed Celta Vigo 5-0, thanks to an early brace by Roberto Soriano.
