Turkey’s military presence in Iraq, declaration of war: Analyst

Scott Bennett, a former US army officer, believes Turkey’s military presence in northern Iraq which has caused escalating tensions between the two countries is a “declaration of war”.

“It is clear that Turkey waged war on Iraq by invading Iraqi territory long time ago. Iraq just simply did not have the ability to respond or did not at the time have the desire to necessarily respond but Turkey essentially invaded Iraq,” the analyst told Press TV.

“They have now been targeted by the Iraqi forces that are saying very simply get out of our country, this is not your country, this is ours and we are moving against the Daesh terrorists,” he added.

Iraq and Turkey are currently engaged in a war of words over the deployment of Turkish troops to northern Iraq last year without Baghdad's consent. Ankara has pledged to take part in the Mosul offensive, drawing a harsh response from Baghdad, which considers the incursion as a “blatant violation” of its sovereignty.

Bennett further mentioned Turkey has been backing and financing the Daesh terrorists along with the United States, Israel and Saudi Arabia to try to re-infiltrate and take over Iraq.

“So it is very clear Turkey, Saudi Arabia and the United States are on the side of Daesh terrorists and Russia, Iran and the Iraqi government and China are on the side of freedom, stability and peace,” he stated.

The analyst also argued Turkey has an opportunity to make a turn for the good and re-establish a relationship with Iraq, Russia and Iran.

However, he said, Turkey would not do that because it does not seem to be honest to admit that it has been put into a position where it is going to lose eventually.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Bennett noted the European political leaders are not going to be allowed to continue to wage the war on terror because this war has caused all of these migrants and refugees to flood into the continent.

“So the people of Europe are suffering and they are finally waking up to the fact that the European political leaders have been on the wrong side of history and they have waged a war that has caused chaos,” he stated.

Washington and dozens of its allies have been carrying out their so-called anti-terror airstrikes against what are claimed to be terrorist targets in Syria and Iraq since September 2015. The campaign, however, has fallen severely short of its avowed aim of dislodging Daesh.
