US Coast Guard: Historic lighthouses up for sale

Historic lighthouses owned by US Coast Guard are up for sale at little or no cost.

Owning a lighthouse might seem pretty dreamy, but the US Coast Guard has announced that lighthouses are up for grabs at little or no cost.

The lighthouses are given away in the hope of preserving the old and ailing structures. Many have been donated to conservation charities, where they are given a new lease of life as museums.

Volunteer groups renovate and turn them into tourist attractions. The US Coast Guard now says it has sold off 120 lighthouses across 22 states. The guard adds that their upkeep was too expensive and that their usefulness was in decline with the emergence of GPS.
