The Nobel Committee says Dylan has been awarded the prize for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition.

Many believe Dylan’s music and lyrics spoke to a generation of people during 19-60s and helped galvanize civil rights movements.

Dylan also becomes the 108th winner of the literature award and the first songwriter to win the world's most prestigious cultural award.

75-year-old Dylan is the first American to be awarded the prize since author Toni Morrison received it in 1993.
