Obama slams GOP for taking too long to withdraw support for Trump
US President Barack Obama has criticized lawmakers from the Republican Party for taking too long to withdraw their support for GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump amid widespread defections over Trump’s recently revealed lewd comments about women.
During a campaign rally for Democrats on Thursday in Columbus, Ohio, Obama insisted that Republicans who are disavowing Trump deserve no credit for their sudden change of heart after having "stood by silently" for so long.
"They don't get credit for at the very last minute when finally, the guy they nominated and supported is caught on tape saying things that no decent person would even think, much less say, much less brag about, much less act on," Obama said.
"You can't wait until that finally happens and then say that's too much and then think somehow you're showing any kind of leadership and deserve to be elected to the United States Senate," he added.
Obama was speaking as Trump is facing widespread defections after his lewd comments emerged last weekend.
Congress members, particularly those facing tough re-election battles, quickly disavowed Trump's remarks, and many said they wouldn't vote for him at all.
Trump welcomed the rift in the GOP in several tweets on Tuesday.
A recording, released on Friday by The Washington Post, shows Trump engaged in a lewd conversation about groping and seducing women.
A second batch of scandalous audio recordings by Trump was released by the CNN on Saturday, including an audio file where he compliments the physique of his daughter, Ivanka.
