In a surprise decision, Bob Dylan, an American singer and songwriter has been announced as the winner of this year’s Nobel Prize for Literature.

The Nobel Committee says Dylan has been awarded the prize for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition. Many believe Dylan’s music and lyrics spoke to a generation of people during 1960s and helped galvanize civil rights movements.

Dylan also becomes the 108th winner of the literature award and the first songwriter to win the world's most prestigious cultural award. 75-year-old Dylan is the first American to be awarded the prize since author Toni Morrison received it in 1993.
