Jo-Wilfried Tsonga wins in Shanghai on injury comeback

French tennis player Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has opened up his Shanghai Masters campaign in style, after defeating his German opponent Florian Mayer straight sets.

Tsonga, who made his first court appearance following a one-month absence due to knee injury, overwhelmed his German rival with an impressive score-line of 6-3, 6-2 to progress into the 2nd round of the tournament on Monday.

Tsonga  notched his 29th win of the season as he dismissed Mayer in 71 minute.

That’s while, America’s John Isner suffered a first round straight-sets defeat at the hands of Germany's Alexander Zverev at the Shanghai Masters.

Zverev, who beat Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka to win the St. Petersburg Open last month, showed a flawless performance on Monday and won the match 6-4, 6-2 to advance into the next round.

The 19 year-old German reached number 21 in the world rankings, after winning 41 matches this season.

He will next take on 8th seed Marin Cilic.There were also wins for Vasek Pospisil, Kyle Edmund, Benoit Paire and Steve Johnson
