US, UN ignoring Saudi war crimes in Yemen: Pundit

Political analyst Ibrahim Mousawi believes that the United States’ acceptance and the silence of the international community have emboldened the Saudi kingdom to continue its bombing campaign against Yemeni civilian areas.

“The whole war against Yemen couldn’t have happened without green light from the Americans,” Mousawi told Press TV’s program “The Debate” on Sunday.

The analyst is of the opinion that the Saudi-led coalition continues its raids against the Yemeni people while the international community fails to adopt any proper measure to stop the Saudi war crimes against the impoverished nation.

“The Saudis haven’t been able at any time to do something from their own actually. They are not in a position to be completely independent without taking a green light from the Americans, especially when you talk about a large-scale war that is taking place” in Yemen, he added.

An airstrike on Saturday, which hit a funeral hall packed with hundreds of mourners, killed over 140 people and injured more than 525 others. It was the latest in a string of Saudi-led bombardments that have struck hospitals, markets and other places where civilians congregate. The military aggression is being conducted with the purpose of imposing the Saudi-recognized government of Yemen's resigned president Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi .

Mousawi expressed regret that the Saudi bombardments against Yemeni civilian areas, hospitals and heritage are happening “under the eyes ... and the silence of the international community.”

He also argued that most influential Arab and Western governments are pro-American, for which reason they accept what the Saudis are doing in Yemen.

According to the analyst, Saudi Arabia pounds civilian targets because the kingdom is bankrupt and the Saudis are not able to confront the Yemeni fighters in the battlefield.

Referring to the root cause of tensions between Saudi Arabia and other nations, he argued, the Wahhabi school of thought does not recognize or respect followers of other sects and ideas, even Sunnis, as human-beings. The Saudis think they can annihilate other people, he said, and “that’s why they are in a complete clash with others.”

The other panelist on the program, political commentator Jihad Mouracadeh, noted that the Saudis and the United Nations are going to conduct separate investigations into the bombing in Sana’a.

He further stated that the UN Security Council had authorized Saudi Arabia to carry out airstrikes against Yemen.

As per the UN figures released in August, more than 10,000 Yemenis have lost their lives since March 2015.
