No nation in the world has suffered more from “ravages of US imperialism” than the people in Afghanistan, author and journalist Stephen Lendman tells Press TV’s Top 5 program.

There is no end in sight for the plight of the Afghan people, who had been suffering from US imperialism even before the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States, Lendman said on Wednesday.

After the 9/11 attacks, the US claimed that it wanted to help the Afghan people, but nothing except death and destruction has happened ever since and Afghans have been suffering from starvation, disease and an endless war since the US-led invasion in 2001, the journalist stated.

Pointing to the fact that there is no reaction to the devastating policies of the United States in Afghanistan and the Middle East, he said, “Most Americans have no idea what is going on in the world,” and they do not even know what is happening in Afghanistan as a result of the US war in the Asian country.

The comments come as the European Union is holding a fund-raising conference for the cash-strapped government in Afghanistan, which has to tackle with a host of issues, including rampant militancy in the country.

Leaders from more than 70 countries and 20 international organizations and agencies gathered in Brussels on Tuesday to take part in the two-day EU-led donor conference.

The United States is one of the countries attending the conference in Brussels, despite the fact that the US-led invasion of Afghanistan has caused devastating instability and terror in the country since 2001.
