Daniel Ricciardo has won the Malaysian Grand Prix while world champion Lewis Hamilton failed to close his championship gap on his Mercedes teammate and rival Nico Rosberg as he was forced to retire with engine failure.

Hamilton, who started from pole on Sunday, dominated the race and was cruising to victory at Sepang until flames started pouring from his Mercedes with just 15 laps remaining.

He had to no choice but to retire as his title hopes went up in smoke. There was also a big slice of luck for Red Bull, with Daniel Ricciardo winning ahead of his teammate Max Verstappen for a memorable 1-2 finish in the fascinating race.

That’s while Rosberg finished 3rd to stretch his lead in the championship to 23 points over Hamilton with only 5 races to go.
