Britain’s Lewis Hamilton has set the fastest time in practice session at the Malaysian Grand Prix while Renault driver Kevin Magnussen escaped a tragic incident after his car caught fire in the pit lane.

Hamilton clocked the Sepang circuit with the best time of 1 minute and 34.944 seconds on soft tires to take top spot on Friday.

Germany’s Nico Rosberg finished in second, two-tenths of a second behind his world championship rival with Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel back third.

Vettel's Ferrari team-mate Kimi Raikkonen was fourth followed by Sergio Perez of Force India and McLaren's Fernando Alonso.

That’ while Magnussen managed to escape from his car in the morning session when fuel escaped from the vent and caught fire. But the car was fixed on time to make to the second session as he finished 19th.
