1 killed, over 108 injured as Train crashes into station in New Jersey
A train has crashed into a station in the US state of New Jersey, killing at least one person and injuring over 100 others.
The incident occurred on Thursday morning, when what was described by the media as a “transit train” struck a wall after entering the Lackawanna Station in Hoboken, New Jersey.
Police and emergency crew are present at the scene and have warned of “mass casualties.” At least two of the injured were said to be in critical condition.
According to video footage posted on social media, both the train and the station have sustained extensive damage.
Preliminary reports suggested that the crash occurred due to an accident or caused by operator error, according to five law enforcement officials.
Station staff said that the train went airborne after crashing into a concrete bumper at the end of the railway.
US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) announced that they had started a special investigation into the incident.
Photos showed debris from the roof and supporting pillars scattered across the station. A carriage is also seen twisted sideways on to a platform.
Another image showed wreckage, cables and pipes dangling from the building's ceiling, hinting that it had collapsed.
According to a radio report, the train had gone through ticket barriers and “into the reception area.”
The station is located nearly seven miles from New York City, close to the waterfront with the Hudson River, and is usually crowded with people who are headed to Manhattan.
“I wasn't on the train, but I arrived just after it happened. There was water coming down off the roof and people climbing out through the windows,” said one passenger at the station. “There were people sitting down with blood coming from their head. There were lots of injuries.”
The New Jersey Transit said in a tweet that all services at the station would be halted until further notice.
