Stephen Lendman, an author and journalist based in the United States, says any nation that maintains sovereignty becomes an “automatic target” by Washington for regime change.

The commentator made the comment during an interview with Press TV on Wednesday about recent remarks by Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei.

The Leader attended the graduation ceremony for Iranian Army cadets in the capital Tehran on Wednesday. He said the Iranian nation faced a vast enemy front due to its dedication to Islam, independence and lofty values.

Lendman said Iran had faced the enemy front ever since its 1979 Islamic Revolution, when the administration of former US President Jimmy Carter engaged in hostilities against Iran through the "so-called Iran-Iraq war."

The United States wanted regime change in both countries, the commentator said, so Iraqi forces, at the behest of Washington, invaded Iran, imposing a war that lasted some eight years.

Washington is concerned about Iran’s independence, Lendman stated. “America, simply, doesn't tolerate this in any country and maintains a policy of regime change.”

The journalist also expressed concern about the United States' nuclear weapons, saying that if America launched a war against Russia, China or Iran, the likelihood of using nuclear weapons by Washington would be “significant and great.”
