Hakuto robot rover undergoes testing in Japan ahead of lunar travel
A Japanese engineering team has tested a pre-flight model of a robot rover named ‘Hakuto’ that’s designed for the moon.
Hakuto is scheduled to be launched from the Earth by SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket and then deployed onto a lunar orbit.
Once on the moon's surface, the rover is set to travel more than 500 meters on autopilot mode while bypassing craters and rocks.
The rover will also capture high-resolution, 360-degree images of the lunar surface and send them back to Earth.
The moon rover weighs 4 kilograms and measures 58 centimeters long. It will be officially unveiled by the beginning of 2017.
