Trump promise to Netanyahu against intl. law: Journalist
Press TV has talked to Richard Silverstein, a journalist and political commentator from Washington, about remarks made by US Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump over his plan to recognize Jerusalem al-Quds in occupied Palestine as "the Israeli capital."
Richard Silverstein told Press TV’s “Top 5” program that Trump’s promise to recognize Jerusalem al-Quds as “the eternal capital of the Jewish people” is a “serious break” of international norms and laws.
“He doesn't really care about the issues of actual diplomatic policy. He doesn't care about international law,” the journalist said.
He opined that Trump would not be able to deliver on his promise to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, because “it would just be a too severe break with previous American policy, but if he did, it would be an absolute catastrophic disaster.”
During a Sunday meeting at Trump Tower in Manhattan, New York, the Republican nominee promised Netanyahu to "recognize Jerusalem as the undivided capital of the state of Israel" if he emerges victor in the US 2016 presidential election.
Silverstein went on to say that US presidents have not raised such a proposition because it would be “a serious break of the international law,” adding that the move would also go against the policies of almost every government in the world, which does not recognize Jerusalem al-Quds as the capital of the Israeli regime.
Warning about the horrible effects of such a decision by Trump in case he wins the US presidency, Silverstein predicted that there would be massive unrest, demonstrations, riots and violence throughout the Arab and Muslim world.
According to the political expert, there would certainly be “another Intifada” in the occupied territories.
He concluded, “This is a cowardly capitulation to the Israel lobby by Trump timed fortuitously just before the first presidential debate,” because the Republican nominee was trying to make a big splash for his media campaign.
