Three universities in the US states of Illinois, Massachusetts and Michigan have been put on lockdown after shooting and stabbing attacks that killed one person and left several people injured.

During that first attack on Sunday morning, a gunman opened fire at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus, shooting at least five to nine people, police confirmed.

Unconfirmed reports stated that at least two of the injured had succumbed to their wounds.

According to police officers at the scene, the gunman fired up to nine shots before fleeing the scene. A manhunt was underway to catch the assailant.

Sergeant Rickey W. Bell with the university’s police department said the crime scene would stay closed until further notice.

Another shooting rocked Illinois in the early hours of Sunday. Several shots were fired in Green Street between Third and Fourth streets at about 1 am local time, but it was not immediately clear if there were any casualties.

Police issued an alert following the shootings, asking local resident to stay indoors until further notice.

Boston stabbing

Nearly an hour after the Illinois shooting, six people were injured in a stabbing attack in Boston, Massachusetts, police said.

According to police, one of the victims was in critical condition and was undergoing surgery.

The rampage occurred on Tremont Street in the Theater District, next to Emerson College. Students were warned to stay away from the shooting scene.

Police said one of the suspects was at large but they had taken another suspect into custody.

Some of the victims were reportedly stabbed with knives while some others appeared to have been attacked with bottles.

Michigan university stabbing

During the late hours of Saturday night, a stabbing attack was reported at Central Michigan University, where one man was critically injured.

Police warned students to stay indoors as the suspect was still at large.

The incidents took place amid a surge in similar attacks across the US over the past few days.

Earlier on Saturday, at least eight people, including a young girl, were shot in Baltimore, Maryland.

The shooting occurred a day after a deadly mass shooting in the state of Washington, when 20-year-old Arcan Cetrin opened fire at a shopping mall, killing 5 people.
