Explosion leaves two police officers injured in Hungary

An explosion has occurred in the Hungarian capital, Budapest, leaving two police officers injured.

The explosion occurred in Oktogon Square in central Budapest at around 1030 pm local time (2030 GMT) on Saturday.

“The police have involved experts for the review of the area, interviewing witnesses and collecting data,” police said in a statement on Sunday.

“The examination of the origins of the explosion and the review of the damage is underway,” police added.

There were no further comments by police, and it is not clear yet whether the explosion was a terrorist attack or some kind of non-belligerent incident.

Meanwhile, local media reported police had evacuated the buildings near the blast and cordoned off the area.

The downtown area is usually packed with passersby and tourists.
