A zoo in Germany is using beacon technology to power its latest smart-phone application, which will give visitors more information.

The app at the Berlin Zoo can tell people what animals are close by. The beacon technology being used here includes small transmitters that can sense when a phone with the app is nearby.

The smartphone has to have Bluetooth turned on for the beacon technology to work. When a visitor gets near the gorilla enclosure for example, the app will automatically bring up information about the gorillas.

Beacon technology is often used in shopping centers to guide people where there is no available GPS signal. One of its best features is, it’s free to use and there is no advertising.
