Device explodes near New Jersey train station
A device has exploded near a train station in the US state of New Jersey as an FBI bomb squad was attempting to disarm it with a robot.
Two men discovered five devices in a trash can Sunday night and informed the authorities, according to Christian Bollwage, the mayor of Elizabeth city.
The FBI was attempting to disarm one of the devices with a robot when it exploded at around 12:30 am Monday, Bollwage said in a press conference.
“I’m extremely concerned for the residents of the community, but more importantly extremely concerned for everyone in the state and country where someone can just go and drop a backpack into a garbage can that has multiple explosives in it with no timers and then you have to wonder how many people could have been hurt,” Bollwage said.
The FBI said in a statement that there were no injuries and law enforcement personnel are at the scene processing evidence.
The incident comes only a day after a blast in New York City left 29 people injured and an unexploded pressure-cooker device was found four blocks away.
Also on Saturday, a pipe bomb went off in a garbage can in Seaside Park, New Jersey, about an hour from the Elizabeth train station.
Investigators didn’t immediately say whether they thought the Elizabeth incident was connected to the blast in New York.
FBI agents detained as many as five people after conducting a traffic stop Sunday just off the Verrazano bridge in connection to the New York City explosion.
The heightened alert comes as world leaders are gathering on Monday in New York City for the United Nations General Assembly.
New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said Sunday that people will see "a very substantial NYPD presence this week — bigger than ever."
