Russia's ruling party ahead in parliamentary elections

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • In Russia, early results from parliamentary elections show the ruling United Russia party is leading with a big margin. With 10 percent of the votes counted, the party garnered nearly 46 percent in the elections. Premier Medvedev says his party will have an absolute majority in the State Duma.
     
  • The Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution has stressed the country’s mistrust of the US. Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei says isolating Iran is Washington's main goal since it sees the Islamic Republic as the main cause of its failures in the region. He also described negotiations with the US as fruitless and even harmful.
     
  • A senior advisor to the Syrian president says the US is colluding with Daesh. Buthaina Sha’aban says the US deadly strikes on a military base that killed dozens of Syrian soldiers have been intentional. She also noted that Daesh terrorists knew about the US intention.
     
  • Iran calls on the United States to remove the remaining obstacles to Tehran's purchasing passenger planes. Iran’s roads and urban development minister has expressed hope that the White House will take due measures to address the issue. Abbas Akhoundi says Tehran supports negotiations with all manufacturers of passenger planes.
     
  • Israeli soldiers have shot and wounded a Palestinian man for a stabbing attack in the occupied West Bank. The injured Palestinian has been arrested after moderately wounding a soldier near an Israeli settlement. The incident came after 4 Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces on Friday.
     
  • The Syrian army has confirmed the downing of a military plane near the city of Dayr al-Zawr. It says the aircraft was shot down while on a mission against Daesh terrorists. The pilot has been killed. Earlier, Daesh said the aircraft was brought down in the Jebel Tharda area of the city.
     
  • A car bomb blast in the Somali capital Mogadishu has killed a general and at least 7 of his bodyguards. A bomber detonated an explosives-laden vehicle next to the general's car near Somalia's defense ministry compound. Al Shabaab militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
     
  • An attack by Libya’s UN-backed government to retake control of the oil port of Sidra has been repelled by rival forces. Forces led by General Khalifa Haftar seized control of Sidra and Ras Lanuf along with 2 other ports last week. They later handed the ports over to the National Oil Corporation.
