Iran rejects Saudi claim that Tehran arms Yemen

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • Israeli forces have shot a Palestinian man in south of the city of Bethlehem in the occupied West Bank. Israeli sources say the victim was targeted after trying to stab an Israeli soldier. Israeli forces killed four Palestinians in the last two days amid escalating tensions in the occupied territories.
     
  • Iran has firmly rejected Saudi Arabia’s allegations that Tehran is sending arms to Yemen. Iran’s permanent mission to the UN said the claims by Riyadh have not been confirmed by any independent body. Tehran also slammed Riyadh for purchasing billions of dollars worth of arms and using them against Yemenis.
     
  • A strong explosion in the US city of New York has left at least 29 people injured. The mayor of the city says there is no indication that the blast is related to terrorism. However, he said the incident was intentional. Another possible explosive device has been found nearby.
     
  • Russian envoy to the UN Vitaly Churkin has called US attack on Syrian army positions in Dayr al-Zawr suspicious. Churkin slammed the US for violating its commitments with regard to cessation of hostilities and breaching its pledge not to target Syrian government positions.
     
  • The US envoy to the UN Samantha Power says Washington regrets the loss of life in the attack. She took a jab at Russia for calling for emergency Security Council meeting after a US airstrikes on a military airport near the eastern city of Dayr al-Zawr.
     
  • Voters in Russia’s Far East have started to cast their ballot in parliamentary elections. The governing United Russia party is likely to win even greater dominance over the lower house in the elections. That shows support for President Vladimir Putin is holding up despite Western sanctions and an economic slowdown.
     
  • Violence has broken out in the Central African Republic, leaving at least 26 villagers dead. The incident took place in the village of Ndomete, north of the capital Bangui. Country’s presidency has put the blame on the Muslim-majority Seleka coalition. The group representatives have not commented on the issue yet.
     
  • Thousands of people across Europe stage protest rallies against free trade deals with the US and Canada. Protesters in Austria and across Germany say the agreements which are yet to be clinched in no way serve the people’s interest.
