Dani Pedrosa has won the San Marino Grand Prix, denying Italian great Valentino Rossi a home victory in front of his passionate fans.

The Spaniard, who had not won since Malaysia in October 2015, started Sunday's 28-lap race 8th on the grid.

He showed a flawless performance in the contest and overtook current championship leader Marc Marquez on lap 14 and pole sitter Horhay Lorenzo later on. Pedrosa then overtook Yamaha's Rossi with 12 laps remaining and crossed the line 2.8 seconds ahead of the Italian to claim his first MotoGP victory of the season. World champion Lorenzo finished 3rd and Marquez in 4th.

The result meant Marquez now leads Rossi by 43 points with 5 races remaining in the season.
