La Liga newcomers Alaves have earned a surprise 2-1 win over defending champions Barcelona at Camp Nou.

The Catalans’ manager Luis Enrique had made 7 changes to the side that beat Athletic Bilbao 2 weeks ago, with Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Andres Iniesta all on the bench.

Enrique’s wholesale changes proved costly as they fell behind with 6 minutes remaining in the first half. Frenchman Jeremy Mathieu equalized early in the second half, but Ibai Gomez took advantage of some awful Barca defending to put the visitors back in front in the 64th minute.

Messi, Suarez and Neymar were united in the second half, but still the Catalans couldn’t make a breakthrough as Alaves held on to take the full 3 points with the 2-1 victory.
