    • The UN Security Council is set to hold a closed-door meeting on North Korea’s latest nuclear test at the request of the United States, Japan and South Korea. This, after Pyongyang confirmed conducting its fifth nuclear test. It triggered a massive quake which was the largest compared to the past four ones.
    • The US president says Washington will never accept North Korea as a nuclear state. Barack Obama also described Pyongyang's latest nuke test as a grave threat to regional security and international peace. He added that the US would work with its partners on fresh sanctions against the North.
    • Syrian media say the government will soon re-open the strategic Ramousah road in Aleppo for civilian use, after recapturing it from militants. The road is the main route into Aleppo's government-held west. It fell into militants' hands in August after the military’s siege was broken.
    • The UN under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs says only small portions of aid have been delivered to Syrians in the past two months. Stephen O'Brien also called for a 48-hour weekly humanitarian pause in Aleppo. He made the remarks in a joint press conference with UN special envoy for Syria Steffan de Mistura.
    • Muslims from around the world have gathered in the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia as they prepare for the start of the annual Hajj pilgrimage. Iranian pilgrims are absent this year due to Riyadh’s failure to provide safety guarantees to Tehran following last year’s deadly stampede in Mina.
    • Iranians from all walks of life have rallied across the nation to condemn Saudi crimes and the Bahraini regime’s crackdown on dissent. Protesters slammed Riyadh for its aggression against Yemen and the deadly stampede during last year’s Hajj rituals. They also denounced Manama for revoking the citizenship of Shia cleric Sheikh Isa Qassim.
    • Afghan troops have recaptured most parts of Uruzgan’s provincial capital, Tarinkot, from the Taliban. Several Afghan forces and 30 militants have been killed in the fierce battles. The Taliban stormed Tarinkot on Thursday and forced many to flee the strategic city.
    • At least four people have been killed and nearly 50 others injured after a train detailed in Spain's northwest. The front car came completely off the track and smashed into an electricity pylon next to the line. The three-car train was travelling between Spain and neighboring Portugal.
