Portugal have suffered a shocking 2-nil defeat at the hands of Switzerland in their opening qualifying match for the 2018 World Cup at St. Jakob-Park stadium.

It only took the Swiss 23 minutes to open the scoring on Tuesday through Breel Embolo who headed home from close range to make it 1-nil.

Seven minutes later, Switzerland doubled their advantage when Admir Mehmedi curled an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the net, making it 2-nil.

Portugal, however, increased the pressure after the restart as Jose Fonte and Nani both came close but they just couldn’t score.

2-0 was the final result and the Swiss go on top of group B with 3 points. Next up for Portugal is a home match against Andorra on October 7th, while Switzerland will make the trip to Hungary on the same night.
