Iran condemns Syria terrorist attacks

Bahram Qassemi, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson

Iran’s Foreign Ministry has strongly condemned the recent string of terrorist attacks that killed over four dozen people and injured many others in Syria.

The deadliest of the Monday strikes saw two bombs ripping through the entrance to the western port city of Tartus, located 220 kilometers (136 miles) northwest of the capital, Damascus, killing at least 36 civilians. As many as 13 other people were killed in attacks elsewhere in the Arab country. The Takfiri Daesh militant group later claimed responsibility for all of the terrorist attacks.

Remarking on Tuesday, Bahram Qassemi, the Iranian Foreign Ministry’s spokesman, said such bloodletting signaled desperation on the part of the terrorists and their patrons.

“The actions taken by the criminal Takfiri terrorists and their Wahhabi supporters to target civilian citizens indicates their dejection and defeat in military warfare and the defeat of their political pipe dreams in the region,” he said.

Qassemi was referring to the widely-reported ideological and financial support provided to the terrorists operating in Syria and Iraq by Saudi Arabia, where Wahhabism originates from.

Such despondency, Qassemi said, leads to the daily recurrence of such horrible crimes in Syria, Iraq, and Yemen.

Saudi-backed militants have been fighting elected governments in Syria and Iraq, and Saudi Arabia has been waging war on Yemen since March 2015, killing about 10,000 lives, according to the United Nations.

“International conventions and the international community have to stop remaining indifferent toward those ordering, supporting, and perpetrating these reprehensible crimes,” the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman said.
