Taliban claims responsibility for deadly twin bombings in Kabul

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has issued his message on the occasion of the annual Hajj pilgrimage. The Leader blamed Saudi rulers for civil wars in some Muslim countries and supporting Takfiri groups. Ayatollah Khamenei also slammed Riyadh for its poor management of last year’s Hajj.
  • The Taliban have claimed responsibility for deadly twin bombings near the Afghan defense ministry in capital Kabul. Nearly 24 people were killed and over 90 others injured. The Taliban militants have recently stepped up their attacks across Afghanistan.
  • US President Barack Obama says talks with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin have failed to find a political solution to the Syria conflict but the two sides will continue their negotiations. Obama said a political settlement will include all parties directly or indirectly involved in the conflict. 
  • Dozens have been killed in a series of explosions across Syria. Reports say two bomb blasts hit a highway near Tartus, which houses a Russian naval base. The attacks left 30 people dead and 45 others injured. Eleven people were also killed in explosions in Homs and Hasakah.
  • French protesters have blocked major roads in the northern port city of Calais to demand the closure of a squalid refugee camp known as the Jungle. The demonstrators say the asylum seekers disrupt their work and life. Thousands of refugees, hoping to reach Britain, are living at Calais camp. 
  • A building has collapsed in Israeli city of Tel Aviv, leaving one person dead and over 20 others injured. A number of people are also missing. An Israeli TV channel has put the number of missing people at 15, but police have not confirmed the report yet. 
  • The world's top two oil producers, Russia and Saudi Arabia, say they’ve agreed to act together to stabilize the oil prices. This, after a meeting between the two countries’ oil ministers. They, however, failed to announce any specific measures to bolster prices. Russia has boosted speculation over an output freeze. 
  • Iran and Britain have exchanged new ambassadors for the first time since 2011. The British embassy was reopened last August, a month after the signing of Iran’s nuclear deal. Former Iranian nuclear negotiator Hamid Baeidinejad has been appointed as the country’s new ambassador to London.
