Reigning Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton has taken pole position for the Italian F1 Grand Prix by setting the fastest time in qualifying at Monza.

The Brit, who was seeking to re-assert his dominance over his Mercedes teammate and rival Nice Rosberg in qualifying, posted the best time of 1 minute and 21.135 seconds to take top spot on Saturday.

Rosberg finished in second nearly half a second slower. Behind the Mercedes cars on Sunday’s grid will be Ferraris of Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen.

The pole was Hamilton's 5th at Monza, equaling Ayrton Senna’s record. Hamilton will start his race nine points clear of his teammate in the championship.
