Kei Nishikori, glad to be back on the New York hard courts where he became Asia's first men's Grand Slam finalist, reached the second round of the US Open on Tuesday.
Sixth seed Nishikori, who recently won the Bronze medal at the Rio Olympics, managed to get past German veteran Benjamin Becker in 4 sets. The Japanese won the match with a score-line of 6-1, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 to progress to the next round.
That’s while, third seed Vavrinka overcame Spain's Fernando Verdasco in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4, 6-4. He’ll next face Aleesandro Gannessi of Italy.
But Day 2 also saw shocking exits in the men’s' singles. 12th seed David Goffin of Belgium was defeated by world ranked 122 Jared Donaldson of the United States with a score of 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, 6-Love. Donaldson, who had never won a match at a Grand Slam event, will play against Viktor Troicki of Serbia in Round 2.
And, American Sam Querrey, who upset World Number 1 Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon, was another big name to be knocked out of the event. On Tuesday, there were also wins for, Grigor Dimitrov, David Ferrer and Jeremy Chardy.
