England's all-time leading goal scorer Wayne Rooney has confirmed that he will quit the international football after the 2018 World Cup competitions, assuming Sam Allardyce's side get there of course.

The 30-year-old will continue to captain the side under new manager Allardyce. Rooney took the armband from Steven Gerrard in 2014.

He has played 115 times for England, putting him level with David Beckham as the country’s most-capped outfield player. England squad is now preparing to play Slovakia in their opening 2018 World Cup qualifier on Sunday, and it will be Allardyce’s first game in charge.

The new manager replaced Roy Hodgson who led England to a disastrous Euro 2016 finals appearance, which ended with the team's exit at the last 16 stage.
