Britain urged to start process of leaving EU

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • A senior Iranian lawmaker says Saudi Arabia resorts to all means in the region and across the world against Iran. Alaeddin Boroujerdi noted that terrorists recently nabbed in Iran have revealed invaluable information about the support they received from Riyadh.
     
  • The United Nations confirms that around 10,000 people have been killed in Saudi Arabia’s 18-month-long war on Yemen. The world body’s humanitarian coordinator Jamie McGoldrick says the death toll is based on official information provided by medical facilities in Yemen. The majority of the casualties are civilians.
     
  • Israel has dismissed the UN criticism of its settlement expansion in the occupied Palestinian territories as absurd. In a briefing at the UN Security Council, the UN special coordinator for the Middle East peace process had denounced Tel Aviv’s settlement activities despite international outcry.
     
  • Iraqi troops have reportedly found a Daesh training camp in the western Anbar province near the Jordanian border. Russian media say there have been weapons and equipment needed to manufacture explosive devices in the camp, which is located near the town of Rutbah.
     
  • Germany has urged Britain to start the process of leaving the European Union as quickly as possible. German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier says the move is in Britain’s best interest given Brexit’s economic effects. He added that the UK and the EU need fair and binding rules for their post-Brexit relationship.
     
  • A car bomb attack on the Chinese embassy in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, has left at least one person dead and three others injured. A driver reportedly attempted to ram his car through the embassy compound gates before an explosive was set off inside the vehicle.
     
  • Italy says its coastguard saved about 6,500 refugees in waters off Libya in one day. This makes Monday one of the busiest days for the Italian coastguard in terms of saving asylum seekers who try to reach Europe via the sea. Officials say the command center coordinated 40 rescue operations during the day.
     
  • Libyan forces have taken control of more areas of the northern city of Sirte from Daesh terrorists. The forces managed to seize new areas after two days of intense fighting that left around 50 soldiers dead. There is no news on the number of terrorist casualties.
