Spaniard Rafael Nadal has started his US Open campaign with a straight sets victory over Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan.

Nadal beat Istomin with a scoreline of 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 on the opening day of the year's last grand slam. The 2010 and 2013 champion will next play Italian veteran Andreas Seppi. Nadal missed the French Open and Wimbledon with a wrist injury which he says is improving day by day.

Meanwhile, Kyle Edmund pulled off the first upset of the US Open by beating Richard Gasquet 6-2, 6-2, 6-3. It was Edmund’s first ever match in the main draw at Flushing Meadows. He will next play American wildcard Ernesto Escobedo.

Marin Cilic was also among the first round winners on Monday. The Croatian posted a 6-4, 7-5, 6-1 win over Brazil’s Rogerio Dutra Silva to reach the second round.

American John Isner rallied from 2 sets down to edge 18-year-old compatriot Frances Tiafoe in 3 hours, 27 minutes.
