One person has been killed and four others injured in a shootout in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, US officials say.

The incident, which happened on the Atlantic City Expressway Monday afternoon, also left a sport utility vehicle riddled with bullet holes.

The shooting was reported to police shortly prior to receiving calls for medical assistance about five miles away on the Garden State Parkway and two miles away at a convenience store.

Police officials found a car and an SUV with bullet holes in its front windshield and on its passenger side door.

Authorities said that the SUV was struck by gunfire at least eight times and the four people inside the vehicle asked for assistance from a passerby.

Bullet holes decimated the window of the white Ford Expedition which was driving on the Atlantic City Freeway. (Dailymail)

Apparently, the people in the two cars knew each other and the shooting was not a random act, according to state police Captain Stephen Jones, who said a “number of guns” involved in the incident were recovered at an undisclosed third location nearby.

“If this in fact was a moving situation where gunfire was being aimed at cars that were moving, (it was) obviously extremely dangerous to everyone involved, not just the intended targets,” Jones said.

According to Erwin Ashworth, a witness, “the driver said he was shot,” and “The passenger was hanging from the window. ... He said everybody was shot at least a couple of times.”

The injured people were hospitalized in unknown condition, but one of them was said to have sustained “serious” injuries.
