A woman’s arm has been ripped off after she tried to close the window of a parked car outside her home.

The 78-year-old woman from Cornwall leaned into her parked car on Saturday and turned on the ignition, but did not know her car was in gear.

police spokesman for the Devon and Cornwall county said, “What appears to have happened is that she has lent into the car to close the electric windows, she has turned on the ignition to get the power to turn the electric windows to close but unfortunately the car was in gear and the car has lurched forward trapping her hand/arm."

She was airlifted to hospital. Police said the woman had suffered “life-changing injuries”, but surgeons hoped they would be able to reattach the arm and she would make a good recovery.
