A pedestrian bridge has collapsed onto vehicles on a major motorway in the British town of Kent, after a lorry crashed into it during one of the busiest days of the year.

Emergency services declared the crash as a major incident in the M20 motorway in Kent on Saturday. They said no people were trapped in the debris.

One person, a motorcyclist, was injured, but his injuries were not life-threatening, medics said.

“Police are treating this as a major incident and the M20 has been closed in both directions to allow this incident to be dealt with. Traffic will be heavier than usual,” it added.

Andy Sunnucks, who witnessed the crash said, “It looked like a lorry had jackknifed, and I could see half the bridge was missing. The back end of the lorry was in pieces.”

“It looks like a crane has hit the bridge and knocked it down,” said another witness. “But on the other side of the road the bridge is cracking as well.”

Another eyewitness who narrowly escaped the collapse said that the bridge “could have fallen right on top of our car."

The incident sparked traffic chaos on the motorway, which is the main route to the Channel Tunnel and the Port of Dover for people travelling to France and across Europe.

Reports said vehicles were queuing for more than four-and-a-half miles along the road where some13 million drivers are expected to take to the road between Friday and Monday.
