Argentines express anger at government policies

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • Russia and the United States say they have reduced areas of misunderstanding on Syria following Geneva talks, adding they have reached clarity on the path to a new cease-fire in Syria. They, however, stressed that technical details remain to be worked out.
     
  • The Al Khalifah regime has begun handing down prison sentences to Bahrainis who stage sit-ins over citizenship revocation of top Shia cleric, Sheikh Isa Qassim, in the village of Diraz. Bahrain has been the scene of regime’s crackdown on dissent since the beginning of a popular uprising in 2011.
     
  • Yemen’s Ansarullah fighters have launched a cross-border retaliatory rocket attack on a Saudi Arabian Aramco oil facility and Saudi troops in Najran province. According to Saudi emergency workers, the rocket hit a power station in southern Saudi Arabia.
     
  • The UN Security Council has strongly condemned North Korean’s test-firing of ballistic missiles. The body also agreed to take significant measures in response to the latest series of such launches. North Korea has slammed the UN discussions as a terrible provocation.
     
  • The Tunisian parliament has resoundingly approved the unity government of Prime Minister Youssef Chahed, supporting a new cabinet line-up. The government should now deal with socio-economic problems of the country. The unity government was backed by 167 of the parliament's 217 members.
     
  • Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has discussed expansion of bilateral ties with Bolivian President Evo Morales on the fifth leg of his six-nation Latin American tour. The two officials also exchanged views on cooperation in the agriculture, science and technology, finance and banking sectors.
     
  • An Argentine human rights organization has staged an anti-government march in Buenos Aires to voice anger at the country’s economic conditions. The group called Mothers of Plaza de Mayo, organized the march against high unemployment and criticized the policies of President Mauricio Macri.
     
  • Italy has declared Saturday a day of national mourning for the victims of a devastating earthquake as hopes of finding more survivors are fading. The quake has claimed the lives of nearly 280 people.
