Reports by two American newspapers have revealed that the newly-appointed campaign manager of the US Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump was charged with domestic violence in the year 1996.

The New York Times and The New York Post made the revelation on Friday, saying, indictments were issued for Steve Bannon but the case ended when his wife, Mary Louise Piccard, failed to appear to testify against him in court regarding charges of domestic violence and battery.

The reports said police had been called to the couple's Santa Monica home in California on New Year's Day in 1996 and had found Piccard upset and with marks on her neck and wrist following an altercation over their finances.

Bannon had reportedly smashed the phone when her wife had attempted to call the police for help.

According to court records, Piccard told investigators that Bannon had ordered her to leave the town during the case and threatened to leave her and their twin daughters destitute.

On August 17, the real estate mogul named Steve Bannon, the executive chairman of Breitbart News and a former investment banker, as his campaign’s chief executive.

Trump is trailing rival Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton by 10 percentage points, a new poll shows.

The Quinnipiac University poll, released on Thursday, shows the former secretary of state has 51 percent of the votes as compared to the New York billionaire having only a 41 percent support.

Clinton has led Trump throughout most of the 2016 presidential campaign. But her lead in recent polls represents a stronger level of support than polls showed in recent editions of the poll.
