Belgium’s Gianni Meersman has won stage 5 of the Tour of Spain while Darwin Atapuma of Colombia maintained the overall lead.

Meersman won the 171.3km route from Viveiro to Lugo with a time of 4 hours 16 minutes 42 seconds to claim his second win at the Spanish Vuelta on Wednesday.

Fabio Felline of Italy finished second with Frenchman Kevin Reza back in third.

There was a big crash in the last kilometer which caused race leader Atapuma lose more than a minute in the finale but officials applied the 3-kilometer rule, meaning the BMC rider could stay in red. Alejandro Valverde of Movistar and Tour de France winner Chris Froome of Sky remain second and third overall, 28 seconds and 32 seconds further back respectively.
