Study shows poor visitor ranking for Doha

Doha has been identified as one of the world's cities with the most unfriendly features to foreign tourists.

A new study has identified Doha as one of the world's cities with the most unfriendly characteristics to foreign tourists in what could be a shocking revelation for a country which is preparing to host 2022 World Cup football tournament.

The study carried out by Condé Nast Traveler has given the Qatar capital a ranking of 10 among the cities that visitors have described as “ugly” and its traffic as “horrible”.

The city’s men have also been described by the visitors as “rude” but its new airport has been described as convenient, the Arabian Business news website reported.

This follows other reports that Qatar’s overall hotel revenues had dropped by 17.8 percent over the year to April, and occupancy rates had dropped by 64 percent.

Figures released by the Qatari government show that almost 5,000 hotel keys had been added to Qatar’s stock over the past 18 months.  There are also speculations that the additional supply has already started to impact performance in the second quarter of 2016, the Arabian Business reported.

The Condé Nast Traveller’s list ranked the US city of Newark in New Jersey as the most unfriendly city to foreign visitors.

Newark replaced last year‘s top ranked city Caracas, while the Mexican city of Tijuana ranked second most unfriendly globally, the report added.

The South Carolina city of Charlestown was named the world’s friendliest city.

Charleston knocked Australia’s Sydney from the top spot it held for the previous two years while no Middle Eastern city made it to the list of the friendliest cities to foreign visitors, the Arabian Business added.
