Rio 2016 Olympics: Iran’s Mardani bested by UK opponent in Taekwondo

Iran’s Sajjad Mardani has been defeated by the UK’s Mahama Cho at the Rio 2016 Olympics Taekwondo and lost the chance to win a medal.

On Saturday, Mardani managed to equalize Cho's early three-point-lead in the three rounds to extend the match into the golden round, when the UK champion got the first point and advanced to the semis. Mardani could have had a chance for a bronze through the repechage round If Cho had reached the final of the over 80-kilogram category.

On Thursday, Kimia Alizadeh Zenoorin won a bronze medal in the -57kg class of Taekwondo competitions to become the first Iranian woman to win an Olympic medal.    

The Iranian Rio Olympics squad finished the world's foremost sporting event with three golds, one silver, and four bronzes.
