Iran marks 63rd anniv. of US-engineered coup

  • Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan has accused the supporters of US-based dissident Fethullah Gulen of helping Kurdistan Workers’ Party militants in their bomb attacks in the country’s southeast. Over a dozen people have been killed in three bombings against Turkish security since Wednesday.
  • Iran has marked the 63rd anniversary of the US and British-engineered coup which ousted the country’s first democratically elected Prime Minister, Mohammad Mosaddeq. The putsch happened in coordination with Iran’s former Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi who opposed Mossadeq over his stance against the US and UK influence in Iran.
  • Russian jets have launched a third day of anti-terror airstrikes in Syria from an Iranian air base. The Russian Defense Ministry says bombers have targeted Daesh's positions in Syria's Dayr al-Zawr province. 6 command posts and a large number of foreign-backed militants were also pounded by the Russian airstrikes.
  • Russia has expressed readiness for a cessation of hostilities in and around the Syrian city of Aleppo after the UN called for a quote humanitarian pause. The Russian Defense Ministry says Moscow is willing to start the first 48 hour pause next week to facilitate the delivery of aid to besieged areas in Syria.
  • At least 3 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed in clashes with pro-Russia fighters in eastern Ukraine. An official said the positions of the army were shelled by the pro-Russia militias in the volatile region. The militias also reported heavy shelling of their positions by the army in Donetsk and Horlivka.
  • A UK-based rights watchdog says ethnic minorities face quote entrenched inequality in Britain. The Equality and Human Rights Commission says hate crimes and race inequality against minorities have been on the rise especially after the Brexit. The EHRC adds that the minorities also remain underprivileged when it comes to employment.
  • People in the flood hit parts of the US state of Louisiana are still reeling from the disaster, though the floods and storms have abated. An estimated 40,000 houses have been damaged by the flooding. This has caused the residents to face the worst housing crisis since Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
  • Heavy rains in southern China have forced the evacuation of thousands of people. Rescuers have been searching for trapped villagers in floodwater. More than 12,000 people were relocated across the Hainan province. Shipping service across the Qiongzhou Strait in Hainan was suspended.
