Iran’s weightlifting federation is expected to send a letter of complaint to the Court of Arbitration for Sports regarding the jury’s controversial decision at the 2016 Olympics against the country’s heavyweight athlete Behdad Salimi.

Salimi set a new world record of 216 kg in the snatch to lead Georgia's Lasha Talakhadze by 1 kg.

However, in the clean and jerk, the judges disallowed Salimi’s first lift of 245 kg. In his second attempt, Salimi thought he had successfully raised the same weight after all judges approved the lift. However, the panel of referees on the jury ruled that his left arm had not been straight.

The Iranian, who had become tired and worn out, then failed in his third attempt and received no scores at all. His closest rival Talakhadze was able to gather a total of 473 kg to claim the gold and set a new world record.

Salimi, on the other hand, was only left with a new snatch world record and a broken heart.
